An inspiring Grandma

Created by Naomi 11 years ago
Grandma was a talented and passionate woman with a big heart and a strong sense of social justice. After training as a nurse she married Tom, a handsome young soldier in the Royal Engineers. When the war ended, they had two wonderful children - Margaret (my mum) and Richard (my loving and treasured uncle). For many years grandma was the Matron of Clay Cross Hall, a specialist nursing home for older people with dementia. In later life she became involved in the local Labour Party and became Chair of the North East Derbyshire District Council from 1996-1997. I have fond memories of her regaling us with tales of all the posh events she'd been to, and modelling her sparkly outfits and gold chain. I was incredibly proud of her tireless fundraising for Leukaemia Research in memory of Richard during her time at the council. Muriel became a great-grandma for the first time in 2005. She always kept a brimming box of toys for Anya (now 7) and Ella (now 2) at her house. She was full of fun, cuddles and generosity for her great-granddaughters even after she moved to The Old Vicarage nursing home in 2012. I have special memories as a granddaughter myself; singing ABBA songs at the top of our voices in her kitchen, and being served delicious meals from her hostess trolley! I am looking forward to sharing her best recipes with my daughters as they grow up. Naomi
